Solar E-Bikes
Adventures and Solar DIYs!

My Story
Hi, I'm Ro-Bucks. Just the average guy that likes to fix just about anything from small bikes, engines, to electronics.

A couple of years ago, I lost my license due to some disabilities. I got an Electric Scooter With lead-acid batteries and was very disappointed; the range was terrible. Ever since I've been on the hunt to get the max range possible but yet to afford a good battery. I guess I'll build one myself.

That is why I play with solar charging E-bikes now. The solar system at least gives me the ability to remotely charge. And I hope to get some good solar e-bike camping in and solar power for that, which is always nice.

I still haven't found the best setup, so come with me on a journey to find the Ultimate Solar E-Bike! It's going to be an adventure.
My Current Solar E-bike Gear
Here is a list of all the solar gear currently on my Solar E-Bike Trailer. For the most part, it's all very affordable, and I have tested them and find they work, or they wouldn't be on the list here. You can find all the hardware on Amazon, and the custom PCB board I made on PCBway.com
I make commission if you purchase using the links below, and I spend all earnings on future video projects and or upgrading my video gear.
Some links have been updated to the newest version of the matching product.
Solar Charge Controllers

JJN Solar Controller 30A

I got one and like it so much I ended up getting one for a friend to try out, where both are still using it a year later, so I say it works great and I like the features. This controller can do lithium and all types of lead acid from 12V to 48V in range.

Renony Solar Controller 10A

I have a few of them right now in use. One in my Solar E-Bike Trailer and one on the solar shed system. They only do 12V and 24V and lead acid, but I have used them for years. They are inexpensive for getting the job done and lightweight. I got mine free when purchasing my solar panels below.

MPT-7210A Solar Controller 10A

This one's a little different than the rest, and a bit more costly. Most solar controllers take a higher voltage from your panels and bring it down to the battery level. This controller takes a lower voltage from your panels and boosts it up like a buck booster. It lets you set your ideal closed-circuit panel voltage, but it will detect that on its own. You can also adjust the max charge voltage and current.
Solar Panels

Topsolar/Renogy 30W

Not much to say about the panels I'm currently using. I actually get about 35W in good conditions, and at 18V I can pull about 1.6 amps. enough to charge a battery. The same kits I used are no longer available, so I found an equal kit for you.
Batteries

DIY 12V 105Ah Lifepo4 kit

I just got them and assembled the battery, so I can't speak for them myself. However, if you check around on YouTube, you can find good reviews; the cells have been tested and proven to be true to the listed specs. I can say the shipping was fast, only 3 days for my order in Ontario, Canada.

3X 12V 22Ah Sealed Lead-Acid

They just showed up in the mail as I was writing this, so I have not tested them, but I have used both 20Ah and 18Ah UpStart, and the brand has always performed well for me.

1.2A Li-ion Lipo Lifepo4 LFP Battery Active Equalizer

This is a little extra tool used to keep your lithium battery balanced. With a good BMS, it's not needed, but it's always handy to have a round so you can balance your cells at any level of charge. It's very simple to hook up with only 5 wires, and you can even leave it installed to help your BMS balance at a higher current, making balancing faster.
Inverter

BESTEK 500W Power Inverter

I've been using mine for 2 years now, both in the shed and on trips in my solar e-bike. It's a 500W continuous and 1000W peak interested that runs my 400W kettle just fine. I also use a 40W slow cooker on the go, so it's plenty for my needs.
My Solar PCB Board

Milti Funcion Solar panel Board

I made this PCB for switching low-wattage panels (4 max) into various different mods in a snap. The top 3 ports are for using 3 panels in series, and under that are 2 ports for two panels in series. On the bottom, there are 4 ports to allow for 4 panels in parallel. Using a jumper on one of the middle 2 ports for series connections allows for a single panel to be used.
